I think something is wrong when a plumber or a carpenter earns
more than the average university graduate .....
not trying to sound elitist, but what kind of message would that
be sending to the youths of that society ? .... why study hard ?
... when you'll earn less ? ...
The blue collars here might earn more than startup white collars
simply because of penalty rates.
If you sacrifice weekends and public holidays, you earn twice
your usual hourly rate.
And if you work the night shift, you get a lot more.
Now, if you work the night shift on weekends and public
holidays, WHOA!
There is a loophole though... I get paid for public holidays
regardless of whether I work or not. So if I take a rest day
on a public holiday, and work as an agency nurse elsewhere, I end
up with at least three times my hourly rate for that day!

All said, blue collars have to put in weird hours to get more
than white collars.
